Healthcare Innovation Program (HIP) is an interdisciplinary, project-based course in which students from healthcare, computer science and management collaborate in mixed teams to address real clinical challenges derived from healthcare practice.
Throughout the semester, teams work jointly to identify unmet clinical needs, translate them into technical and entrepreneurial problem statements, and develop digital health solutions in an iterative manner. Students collaboratively design, prototype and evaluate digital health applications that integrate clinical relevance, technical feasibility and entrepreneurial validation.
The course is supported by academic faculty and clinical partners and complemented by external expertise from TUM Venture Labs, UnternehmerTUM. As outcomes, teams produce scientifically grounded and practically validated prototypes, with selected projects offering the potential to evolve into research initiatives or scientific startup ventures.
Stanford Biodesign contributes directly through a guest lecture by Paul Schmiedmayer, Assistant Director of Digital Health at the Stanford Mussallem Center for Biodesign, providing methodological input on need-driven innovation and digital health prototyping.
At the end of the course, the strongest project team is offered an international exchange visit to the Silicon Valley to deepen collaboration and methodological learning.
